Science

At Dosthill Primary Academy, our Science curriculum covers a broad range of topics designed to ignite curiosity and build knowledge in both Key Stages 1 and 2.

Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, students begin exploring foundational concepts in biology, chemistry, and physics. Key topics include:

  • Plants: Identifying different plants and understanding their basic needs.
  • Animals, including Humans: Learning about the human body, life cycles, and different animal groups.
  • Everyday Materials: Identifying and classifying materials and their properties.
  • Seasonal Changes: Observing weather patterns and how seasons affect the environment.

The emphasis in Key Stage 1 is on observation and developing questioning skills. Pupils also begin conducting simple experiments to foster their understanding of the world around them.

Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, students build on this foundation with more detailed study and experimentation. Key topics include:

  • Living Things and Their Habitats: Exploring ecosystems, food chains, and the classification of living organisms.
  • States of Matter: Understanding solids, liquids, gases, and the water cycle.
  • Electricity and Magnetism: Learning about circuits, conductors, and insulators.
  • Forces and Motion: Investigating gravity, friction, water resistance, and simple machines.
  • Earth and Space: Studying the solar system and Earth’s movements.

Throughout both key stages, students develop essential scientific enquiry skills, including making predictions, collecting data, and drawing conclusions. Our science curriculum is designed to encourage curiosity and equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to “know more, do more, and remember more,” in alignment with the Discovery Curriculum threads. Key themes such as Curiosity, Challenge, and Sustainability are woven through science lessons, with a strong emphasis on practical, hands-on investigations to deepen pupils’ understanding of scientific principles.
